Calling a fly ball
Question
In our game yesterday, a fly ball was hit to left field and the left fielder called that he had it several times while clearly not needing to move from much from his position. Meanwhile, the center fielder started running over, called to catch it and caused the ball to dropped as he ran into the left fielder. One of us says that the center fielder was wrong and another says that the center fielder is allowed to call for anything. What do you think?
Answer
The centerfielder (CF) is generally in charge of the outfield as a shortstop is generally in charge of the infield. When a CF is coming in for a play between himself and the shortstop or any infielder, it is the OF's play--because he is coming in and he can see the infielder. The infielder can not see where the CF is and if it is an easy play. The corner outfielders should obey the CF's shift suggestions and play where he wants them to. The centerfielder and the catcher are able to see the entire field of play and they have a centered idea of how to set up the defense. If the CF calls a ball, it's his play, period. The other outfielder should yield and move to back up the play. However--the CF should be the best outfielder on the team and he should have good enough judgement to consider if he should overtake one of the other outfielders or if the play is easier for that outfielder. In certain cases--for instance, if the play in in right-center, between a rightfielder who throws lefthanded, there is going to be a throw needed to third, the CF might let the lefty have the catch because he'd be in better position to throw across his body to third. Again, in general, if the CF calls it, moving to left field, right field, or coming in toward the infield, it's the CF's play.
