Hi Brian, I am not a baseball...
Question
Hi Brian, I am not a baseball fan but the other day I was watching a game and the following situation occurred: one run separated the teams and it was the ninth inning and one team had eight pitchers on their roster and had used seven so far. Suppose the trailing team tied the score in the ninth, the extra innings start to add up and a team needed a pitcher but their last one is on the mound and getting tired. What does the manager do--start asking who pitched in high school and tell him to warm up? Just curious. Thanks very much.
Answer
Doug,
Basically, what you think happens is what happens! The manager either asks for volunteers among his position players, uses a starter that hasn't pitched in a couple days, or suffers with the guy who is out there.
For any game, you can only use the players on your roster. And once a guy is taken out, he can not go back in.
Once a season or so, a position player will take the mound in a situation where the bull pen is played out. Typically, it is when the game is out of hand.
Hope this helps!
Brian
