Hi Coach, Now you have me a little more curious. Why does the run count if there is no forced out and not count when there is a forced out. What is the reasoning for this distinction. Thanks very much.
Question -
Hi Michael, I am not a baseball fan as the following question will show but I am still curious. Suppose it's two out and a man on third. The batter hits what might be a double. the man on third reaches home and then the batter is thrown out at second. Will the run count since the man reached home before the final out? Thanks.
Answer -
Doug,
Thanks for the question and there is always hope for you. I mean you still have a chance to become a fan!
The run will count if the runner reached home prior to the final out being recorded. The home plate umpire will signal the run counting by pointing at home plate.
The only time a run does not count even if the runner passes home plate prior to the out being recorded is if the batter is forced out for the third out. Example, he hits a ground ball and is forced at first or he hits a fly ball and it is caught for the third out or even if he strikes out, the catcher drops the ball, and then has to throw to first for the third out.
I hope this helps!

Answer
Doug,
The exact reasoning behind this is unknown to me. This is just one of those rules of baseball. I would assume the reasoning to be that the pitcher has the opportunity to get the batter forced out at first base, which is his job, without the risk of the runner at third scoring. This rule sets up yet another strategic situation which makes baseball such a great game. For instance, if you have a runner on third with less that 2 outs, you will want your batter to sacrifice himself with a fly ball out or a bunt out to get the runner home. With less than 2 outs, the advantage is to the hitting team, but with 2 outs, the advantage swings to the defense.
As for why this is the case, you got me. The rulesmakers decided this long ago and we just have to play according to their rules.
Thanks for the interest!
