Appeal of called strike
Question
Today's game had a situation where there were none out, none on base, one ball, one strike. On the next pitch, the plate umpire called a swinging strike on the batter who was attempting to check his swing. In this situation, can the batter, or the batter's manager, ask for an appeal to the field umpire to get the plate umpire's call changed to a ball? Can the field umpire overrule the plate umpire's call?
Answer
Andy,
Thanks for the question. You can appeal this to the field umpire and he can consult with the home plate umpire. IF the home plate umpire asks the field umpire to overrule him, he can. Otherwise, it is the home plate umpire's call and if he does not want to ask for help, he doesn't have to. It is the plate umpire's call. In no instance will the field umpire overrule him without the plate umpire's permission, and vice versa on a call that is the field umpires.
Unfortunately, this is the way the game works.
I hope this helps.
