Pitching Development
Question
I have two sons ages 9 and 10 who both have expressed a desire to improve their pitching. They both play in little leage with the mound being 44 feet away. What types of drills and frequency would you recommend I teach them to help them improve their pitching control, velocity, and stamina.
Answer
Michael,
I would suggest long toss on a frequent basis (almost daily) to improve arm action, stamina and velocity. Start with a comfortable game of catch, always aiming for a target. Every 3-6 throws take 2 steps back until they've reached a maximum distance they can through by just stepping through like an infielder. Gradually work your way back in 2 steps every 3-6 throws until you reach a distance of 35-40 ft. Then they can alternate crouching and pitching to one another at 50-75% primarily working on location. As soon as their hands are large enough, I'd have them working a change-up grip into their throwing.
Good luck,
Pat
