Mits
Question
What is the best way to break in a catchers mit?
Answer
First, understand that it takes a LONG time to properly break in a catcher's mitt. This is why I always advise buying a new mitt long before the old one wears out completely.
I prefer using mink oil to break in gloves. Some do not like that method, citing that it makes the glove heavier (which I don't believe is true). There's also the commercial products on the market (mostly foams) that are supposed to break the leather in, but I don't find they work as well as mink oil. Back in the old days, the used to put a ball in the glove, tie it up tightly, and run it through the washing wachine. I've never tried that method, so I wouldn't recommend it.
After treating the leather with whatever product you choose, next step is to use it as often as possible. Even if you aren't going to use it in a game for a while, use it when you're warming pitchers up.
This all takes time, but eventually the glove will be in game condition.
