Dumb runner continued
Question
Brian,
You answered a question from Bill concerning what would happen to a runner that stands on 1st while the 1st baseman fields a hit, and steps on 1st. I understand the batter is out, but I would say this removes the force and the runner would not have to advance. You stated the runner must attempt to advance to 2nd and "in all cases a runner may not retreat to 1st".
Let's change the scenario a little. If a slow runner is on his way to second when the 1st baseman removes the force by getting the batter out, and the runner gets caught in a run down, I believe the runner may return to 1st, as the base is unoccupied and the force no longer exists. Right?
Now back to the first question. The safest play for the defense would be to tag the runner standing on 1st, as the force is in effect, and then touch 1st for the put out.
Where did this question originate? From me, as I'm coaching a young girls team with a handful of first timers. Not dumb runners, just very inexperienced. Thanks for the response. This is a good discussion question, but so far I seem to be in the minority thinking the play must be on the baserunner first in order to get the easy double.
Any chance on rethinking your response or getting others thoughts?
Answer
Mike,
I answered based on a clause in the rulebook. It is possible I misinterpreted it, because I'm not really a rule expert. But, as soon as the batter hits the ball, the runner must abandon first base. True, the force is removed when the base is stepped on, but I don't think that gives the runner the right to go back to the base.
As far as changing the scenario, the runner may not return to first safely, at least as how I interpret the rulebook.
You are correct in that the easy play is to tag the runner first, then step on the base. It doesn't matter that the runner doesn't leave first, because as soon as the batter makes contact, first base is not a sanctuary for the runner.
As far as where this question started, I have no idea - someone just sent it in to me and I tried to answer it ;)
Hope this helps!
Brian
