Batter Rotation
Question
If the last batter is at the plate for an inning and he hits a foul ball on a first or second pitch and there is a runner at third base who attempts to steal home but creates the final out, does that batter (who wasn't responsible for the end of the inning) start the batting rotation when that team begins the next inning? That's how it's done on my grandson's little league team. I've been advised, however, that it's the rule in Major League as well. I've never seen or heard this and would like clarification. Thank you in advance.
Answer
J,
The last batter at the plate when the out was made does start the batting order during the next inning. They don't lose their turn at bat if a runner makes the final out. Basically, the batter isn't penalized for the runner ending the inning.
It doesn't matter if they have a count on them or not.
Hope this helps!
