Sons future in baseball...
Question
My 8 year old left handed son is a left hand batter, but he throwing with his right and catches with his left. How much of a advantage is this going to be for him over a right handed batter when he gets in to high school or or a pro-team? And is it really rare to have a lefty catching like a righty or pretty normal?
Answer
The advantage that a lefty hitter has at most levels of play is the fact that he is a step or two closer to first--which helps him beat out singles and stretch singles into doubles.
There are more righty pitchers than lefty pitchers, and often a lefty batter will see pitches better off of a righty ( and visa versa ), so this may present a slight advantage. However, many righty hitters have tremendous success. If a guy can hit, he can hit.
Have fun.
