Introducing new sports
Question
My 5 year old boy has excellent hand eye coordination and loves playing and carefully watching baseball. Coaches have said he has a unique physical ability and is advanced beyond his years in his grasp of the game.
I have been hesitant to introduce other sports such as golf and tennis for fear of messing with what appears to be a very natural batting swing. He is generally a good athlete and has interest in all sports. Will the mixing very different motions of tennis and golf swings affect a baseball swing?
Answer
Good question.
Absolutely not. If he's five years old, he should play as many sports as possible as long as he enjoys them. You never know what one sport is going to do for another in terms of skill transference. In other words, he may be a great little baseball player now and that's great, but by playing tennis or golf or any other sport he will only benefit from the diverse physical and mental requirements that each sport brings to the table. Hand eye coordination, balance, and overall athletic ability come from all sorts of experiences and activities and should only be nurtured and built upon. The more diverse activities your son can participate in, the better he will know his body and be able to do different things with it. If he wants to take up rock climbing, I'd encourage it. Some of the best arms I ever encountered when I coached baseball were guys who happened to surf a lot. That's not a coincidence. There is no better workout for the rotator cuff than the one a surfer gets paddling out to catch a wave. Football players are encouraged to try ballet or some form of dance to better their coordination and balance. Almost every baseball player I know plays golf and not by accident, either. If your son already has the natural ability, then that's half the battle. Now just make sure he's having fun and he'll eventually fall into the sport or sports he feels are best for him. Good luck and please let me know if you have any further questions. Hope this helps.
