Consecutive game hitting streak
Question
Mike - I hope you can appreciate the irony. My question regarding breaking a consecutive game hitting streak was answered just last night. Derek Jeter (NYY) has on ongoing hitting streak. Last night he was 0 for 0, with 3 walks and a hit-by-pitcher. According to the media, his streak is in tact because he had NO official at bat. So, I guess that settles it. I still wonder if that was always the ruling?! Ciao!
Answer
Interesting, and not sure if that's always been the ruling or not. White it's true that a walk is not viewed as an at-bat from a batting average standpoint, it IS a plate appearance (after all, it improves your on-base average!). So, seems kind of strange to me that it wouldn't affect the hitting streak -- but so much the better for Jeter!
