baseball teams
Question
If I get a call that I made the Travel Team, how do I say "no", I'm not gonna play for you, sorry. Do I have to have a reason to say no and if so what should I say. because I'm a very shy and normally not mean to people and I'm not used to declining things, I just want to say it without being mean. Plus, do high school coaches like utility players that play more than 1 position well.
Thanks
Ray

Hi, Thank you so much, I was talking to a ton of people and nobody really gave me a good answer, that was short and right to the point. What positions are easier to make on a baseball team. I mean I play catcher, 1B, all outfield positions, 3B kinda, and want to pitch.Which position should I try out for. I talked to my varsity friend and he said when he was a freshman, not many people played catcher, but already I know of 2 other catchers.
Thanks, Ray

Hi,
I tryed out for a travel baseball team in my town and I told mey friend who's a junior in highschool and i'm a freshman in highschool. He asked if i was gonna play for the freshman team or not. I said I'll try out. He said the freshman coach doesnt like when you play for more than one team. He also said that the freshman team is more important than travel because you can get in the groove of the baseball system. If i make the travel team, should I decline the offer. If so, how do I say to the coach that I wanna quit.
Thanks, Ray

Ray,
Play Freshman baseball for your school. If you're good enough to play at a high level, there is plenty of time for that to become evident. If you're that good, you won't have to try out...they will invite you. Stick with your school's team and develop your skills. You're going to be there for four years. You don't want to get off on the wrong foot by alienating someone who might be the Varsity coach when you're a senior. Save the traveling teams for when they mean something. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm glad to help.

Ray,
My pleasure.
As far as positions to play, a lot of that tends to work itself out, but if you enjoy catching, stick with it. Catchers are very tough to come by and good ones are worth their weight in gold. I would recommend that you start there, but don't be afraid to learn as many positions as possible. Being flexible and versatile is also something a coach looks for. I played SS for most of my life, but because I could also handle playing CF, 2B, 3B, and Catching I got a lot more playing time. Loving the game and working at it will take care of a lot. Good luck, Ray! Let me know if you need anything else.

Answer
Ray,
Just be honest. You're not doing anything wrong. Tell him that this is your freshman year in high school and you don't want to get off on the wrong foot with your new coach. Tell him that your honored by being selected and that you might be interested in future seasons with his team, but not this year. Ray, any team that is competing with the high school schedule can't be all that relevant. If you're that good, he'll want you on his team no matter how many times you turn him down.
And yes, any coach with half a brain would love to have a guy that can play multiple positions. Why wouldn't he? Good luck, Ray. You're going to be fine.
Let me know if you need anything else.
