baseball question
Question
What's a 4-6-3 double play mean?
Answer
Chris,
Thanks for the question. The 4-6-3 DP is the pitcher's best friend. It is a double play ball that is hit to the second baseman (4), thrown to the Shortstop (6), and then thrown on to the first baseman (3) to complete the twin killing.
The numbers, 4,6,3, are the numbers given to the defensive positions for scoring purposes. Each position is given the numbers as follows:
Pitcher-1
Catcher-2
1B-3
2B-4
3B-5
SS-6
LF-7
CF-8
RF-9
When keeping the scorebook, these numbers are used to describe the plays, hits and outs that take place. For a Flyout to left, F7. A grounder to firstbaseman who steps on bag himself, 3U for first base unassisted. A grounder to third out at first, 5-3. It makes it easy, but is can be confusing to learn.
I hope this helps.
Have a great holiday,
