Opening up
Question
My son's coach told him that he is opening up to early when hitting. The coach offered him no solution to this problem. What can he do to correct and what is the proper relationship of his shoulders to the contact point of the baseball? Thanks
Answer
To help him stay closed and square to the ball, soft-toss to him and stress the fact of staying back and waiting for the ball. Make him stay back and tell him, "back, back, back, swing." This should help him get timing down and stay back on the ball so he won't lose his power by opening up. The shoulders should be almost square to the plate or in front of him and arms extended.
