inconsistant Pitcher
Question
My son was just cut from his high school sophmore baseball team. He has taken lessons and has generally good motion. But when he pitches you never know who is going to show up. The kid with the strong low fastball and good changeup or the kid who can't find the strikezone. What can he do do develop consistancy?
Answer
pitchers at every level struggle with their consistency. There are usually 2 main things to look at. The mental side and the physical. If a pitcher is not confident in their ability then they will "pitch and Pray". they will let the blind luck determine the outcome of their inning.
The physical side has to do with the ability of the pitcher to replicate their delivery over and over AND OVER again. This takes a lot of practice and some idea of what the cause and effects are in their delivery. For example if i throw a fastball that misses high and in it means I'm pulling off to quickly and not getting good extension towards the plate. The fix is a personal thing I only found over many years of playing.
I would encourage your son to not give up if pitching is something he really wants to do. We all encounter setbacks in our life. I was "cut" TWO times from making the Big League club out of Spring Training before I finally made it.
good luck
