Discipline troubles
Question
I am coaching a group of 7-8 year olds. We have a decent team but we have such a hard time keeping them disciplined. There is constant fighting, arguing, calling each other names, complaining about not playing where they want to. It is very frustrating. We could be one of the best teams in the league if were not for the internal conflicts.
Answer
Hi Richard.
You don't have it easy.
How involved are the parents? Are you alone in the coaching of these kids? You will need help.
Here's my suggestion:
Annouce to the team that awards will be given at the end of the season: most valued player (MVP), most improved, best team spirit, most valued leader, most valued outfielder, most valued infielder, best at bat, ... If you can think up other awards, it will help.
Stress that the awards are based on merit, ability and team spirit. Any fighting, name calling, and the like will result in loss of points towards the award.
It could very well be that the best batter could lose the award to someone who is more team-oriented.
You'll have to invest in some award plaques or statues with the winner's name engraved. I've done this. Maybe the parents will contribute...you can always ask.
Speaking of which, include the parents in discussing the problem. This behaviour distracts from the children learning the sport. Most parents are anxious to have their kids 'sign up' with the first available AAA team...so when you tell them that 'little Johnny' has a behavioural problem and is not learning or playing the game properly, the parents may take notice.
You'll have to take time out each practice to emphasize the turn nature of baseball - a collection of 9 players on ONE TEAM. Anything else is unacceptable and will result in a game suspension. Make it like the big leagues...kids can identity with this - they read about it all the time. Game suspensions!!!! ooooohh... that sort of thing.
Have the stronger players help the weaker ones. Play to the leadership side of stronger players. Tell them that they have good qualities and that they can help the weaker player and the whole team too!
You have your work cut out for you.
Best of luck,
