switch hitting during a game

Question
We have two boys who switch hit. The boys are 9 and 10.
They have been playing ball since they were 5. They play on different teams this year. Both managers do not want the boys batting right handed one inning and then left handed the next inning. Neither manager is a left handed hitter and has no experience with switch hitters, how to train them, how to use them for the team's advantage, etc.

Answer
Kimberly,
First of all, switch-hitting is a great skill to develop, and the fact that your sons are doing it already is a great thing, but I'm not sure you asked me a question, here.  If you're asking for my advice regarding the situation, I'd tell you to take a deep breath and relax a little bit.  If I was your kids coach, I wouldn't want him switching back and forth indiscriminantly, either.  The purpose of switch hitting is to give the hitter an advantage and to see the ball better.  Lefties see the ball better out of a RHP's hand and vice versa.  If your kids are simply switching back and forth, hitting right handed against RHP's, then they are defeating the purpose.  With that said, if a LHP is on the mound, both of your sons should be hitting right handed and if there is a RHP on the mound, your sons should be batting left handed.  Simple as that.

The reason I suggest taking a deep breath is that I can tell you're not happy with the coaching your sons might be getting.  Keep in mind that at this age-level, most coaches are volunteers, dads, etc..  They're not professional coaches and shouldn't be.  They should be making sure that your sons have a healthy, sportmanship-oriented environment to learn the game of baseball.  When your kids get into high school and college where the coaches are paid (not much, mind you), you can expect a little bit more out of your coaches, but until then if you want an elevated level of instruction at a young age, you'll need to look into baseball camps and summer leagues that travel and play at a higher level.  Trust me, your boys are not being held back.  At this age, winning should be put on the back burner.  Just make sure they're having fun.

I don't know if I answered your question or helped your situation, at all, but if you have a more specific question, please don't hesitate to ask.  Good luck with the boys.
