Coaching career choices
Question
I am a college freshman interesting in becoming a coach. Would you recommend that I major in Excercise Science, Physical Education, Athletic Training or something else?
Answer
Hi Patrick,
I'd take this question to one of your professors. I guess it depends on what type of coaching interests you. Personal training, individual or team sport, highschool, college or adult education...
My son had a coach that had a degree in biometrics and physical sciences. It gave him alot of background however it did not make him a better coach. I guess he was absent during anger management studies. :( It did give him a solid background in the physiology of athletic development, however, his lack of people skills overshadowed this.
I mention this because it's possible to focus on a subject and forget about the final objective. If you want to be a well rounded coach, take those subject that you think will improve you teaching skills and add to your coaching technique.
Find a subject that motivates you and see where it leads you. As for which major, ask your profs lots of questions and find out what's the best direction to take.
Best of luck in your studies,
