Stocky Frame Pitcher
Question
Hey Jon,
I'm 19 and I've been working my way back into baseball slowly after being away from the game for 2 years but keeping fresh by running, throwing, and hitting whenever possible. I'm ready to start kicking it up a notch. My question to you is about work habbits and using my body to my advantage.
I'm curious what you tend to do during the offseason to get to playing form and beyond.
Also, I know you play in the AL now, I was curious if you've gotten to see Bartolo Colon pitch in person or anything beyond that and if you could give me any tips that he might use to better himself so that I can improve on my abilities (We have almost identacle frames at 5'11" and 245. I plan on being 230 and much more muscular by the time Im playing at the college level)
Answer
During the first half of the offseason I'm usually doing very little baseball stuff, so that i can recover from the season. When I start getting ready for spring training, I always try and find somewhere that I can throw to catcher. Its usually my high school team. As much as I go down there, nothing can get you in "playing form" except playing.
Look for an adult league or even a softball team thats competitive.
as far as using your body better. Pitching is more about using your lower body to get your arm in the best position possible, than simply throwing. while i've only seen bartolo colon pitch once (in spring training a few years ago) he uses his legs exceptional well. (I say this to a lot of people because it works) Try imitating his mechanics! Its sounds silly, but he's doing a lot of things right. Without seeing you pitch I won't give you drills to do because I don't know what you need to improve.
Otherwise, just enjoy yourself and try and get better everyday!
