Extra base on wild pitch ball four
Question
If a batter receives a ball four on a wild pitch, can that batter try and take an additional base at his own risk?
Answer
Hi Scott,
he should 'walk his base' and then he is at liberty to steal - only if the ball is in 'play'. If the ball was pitched wild and caught under a fence or in the stands, the umpire should stop the play. In this case, he can only steal a base after the umpire calls 'play ball'.
I've seen players steal 2nd after being walked to first. Some trot to first. Once on 1st base, and the game is still in 'play', any baserunner can attempt a steal.
