tendonitis
Question
My 14 yr old son is a pitcher. He has recently been diagnosed by his doctor with having tendonitis in his pitching elbow. He is 6ft tall and weighs 145 lbs. He has been clocked at 80mph on the gun. Im worried about hurting his arm more. How long should he shut it down for??? Does he continue to work out using rubber bands and light wieghts? Doctor doesn't seem to be able to provide answers other than use ice and take it easy. Its very frustrating the season is under way and I am worry about slowing down his development as both a positional player and pitcher.

Answer
Brad,
This can be a very serious condition because it can be the next step to a more serious issue. However, you can speed up the process. I would recommend some therapy in the form of muscle stimulation and ultrasound therapy to the injured area. You can have this done by a chiropractor, or you can get a prescription to a physical therapist from your doctor.
I always recommend what the big leaguers do...the 15 day DL. During which he will not pitch, but he can to the light work out with tubing and 3 lb dumbbells. A pitcher at 14 doesn't want to work out with heavy weights. The max is about 10 lbs. Ice is huge and very important...but therapy can really speed and help improve the healing process.
I hope all goes well.
