Bunting for younger players
Question
Mike,
Thanks for answering my question. I have been a coach, manager, and umpire in Little League for over 20 years. I think bunting is an essential skill that cannot be taught too early against live pitching. I believe that if it's the only way a player can 'get a hit' and feel they are contributing (vs striking out), then they should be allowed to bunt during games. Last year we had bunting for our coach-pitch 8- and 9-yr olds. One of our Board members tried to put a stop to it by claiming Little League insurance won't cover a player at that age if he bunts. Really! This year he is trying to stop it again by claiming "all of the research shows bunting should not be used in games at that level". My question: What research? Do you know of anything beyond opinion?
Answer
Bob,
You are absolutely right. Bunting is a fundamental must for every young player up to the big leagues. This guy is a plain and outright idiot. I have never heard of such a claim that "insurance won't cover it". More kids get teeth knocked out trying to catch a ball than ever get hit trying to bunt. He will have to show me the research because I have never seen or heard of such goofiness. This guy doesn't know baseball. I say you send him over the local soccer league!!!!
