Arm Health
Question
I coach a group of 12 year old all-stars. This weekend was our first tournament, and the majority of arms were very sore in a hurry. What would be your suggestion in terms of what we should have the kids do for an at home arm care program.
Thanks
Answer
Jeremy-
Be sure that your pitchers are icing their arms after they throw. beyond that try and keep the amount they're throwing to a minimum. A pitcher only has so many "bullets" be sure that they are saving them for the games.
If they arms are healthy and you can give them a few days off, get them throwing in practice for a set amount of throws from set distances. maybe 10 from 60 ft., 10 from 90 ft. , and 5 from 110 ft. Use your own discretion about distance and throws by watching them carefully.
The arm always needs as much rest as it can get between heavy workloads.
I won't suggest they do a whole lot at home unless somebody can watch them and give you feedback about what they've done.
