Umpire Positions
Question
Hi,
Where should minor league field umpires stand in the game? I know to stand directly behind 1st base when no one is on base, or if there is a runner at third. I stand 3/4 of the way towards 2nd when there is a runner on first. Are there other positions that a fielding umpire should know about?
Thanks!
Answer
Hi Michael,
the base umps we had stood only at those spots you mentioned. Outfield umpires are rare in minor and youth leagues and used only on special occasions in the majors.
In our league, we sometimes had two umps. On rare occasions maybe three. I always thought that if only one base umpire was used, he or she was always just ahead of the lead runner. During regional championships, we had 3 base umpires and 1 plate umpire making the ump crew.
I would think the positions you mentioned are good if you are the only base umpire. If there are more than one base umpire, I think one remains on 1st and the other 'floats' between 2nd and 3rd.
I want to take a moment and thank you for providing this service. I know it can be a thankless job and I just want to acknowledge your contribution to baseball. Just in case some forget to thank the ump. I always did.
