Weight Transfer
Question
Hi, I throw at about mid 50s to low 60s and have noticed that when I make throws from the outfield when my weight goes into it, the ball seems to be going faster. Is their anyway that I could pitch with such a weight transfer to speed up my pitching? Should I make a more exaggerated leg kick to transfer the weight? Do you know of any pictures on the internet that could show some examples of this?
Thanks, Ray
Answer
You're probably right in assuming you throw harder from the outfield then off the mound. It has a lot to do with using your lower body. Your arm can only produce so much velocity, the trick is to maximize your lower body while pitching to get more velocity.
The key is not the leg kick. Give it a good lift but be in control while you're doing it. A pitchers power comes from their legs and hips. Record some pitchers you like off the TV. Watch their delivery in slow motion, and compare it to your own. Notice how long they keep their hips closed. when the front foot lands they violently torque their hips open (belt buckle faces home plate).
This motion creates a chain reaction that ends with the wrist snapping to release the ball to the target. Maximize this Chain reaction and you'll see your velocity increase.
