Scoring at Home Plate
Question
Runner at 3rd base, batter lays down a bunt drops bat in baseline. Pitcher throws runner out at first, then the first baseman throws the ball to home. Runner has to jump over bat touches home plate just before cathcer gets the ball runner was called out due to not sliding. The runner could not slide due to bat should the umpire have moved the bat should the runner have been called out?
Answer
This obviously relates to a park ball "must slide" rule. Based on most of these rules, it doesn't matter what the situation, if there is a play at home plate, the runner MUST slide or he is automatically out, which seems to be the call made in this situation. As for moving bats, I make it a point to NEVER touch a bat. As an umpire, you carry a certain amount of liabillity for the safety of the players. If something happens due to your action, you can find yourself in a lot more trouble than your small game fee constitutes (see article below).
