1st and 3rd situation
Question
This is the situation...tie score, top of the last inning with no outs and runners on 1st and 3rd. Hard groundball to shortstop with enough time to throw home. Should the shortstop throw home or go for the double play? What is the best play?? Thanks for the time to help out
Answer
If I were coaching (or playing) in that situation, if the SS has enough time to make the play at the plate, I would definitely do that with no outs. If he gets the out at home, most likely the double play will still be in effect when the next batter comes to the plate. Of course, if the game wasn't tied, or if the ball were hit too softly (or if the runner on 3rd was too fast) to make the play at home with reasonable certainty, then I would prefer going for the double play.
Hope this helps.
