Some Points To Be Remembered By A Rookie Surfer
While surfing is a thrilling and adventurous sport, a participant must follow certain rules while participating in the same. And overlooking those rules out of zeal or mistake may get both himself as well as other fellow surfers in trouble, and even danger.
Surfing is a very popular sport given the taste of thrill and adventure that it offers. However, like any other sport it demands adherence to some rules that as a beginner you must always keep in mind. Some of these rules are as follows -
You must duck drive your surfboard properly, as otherwise you will pose danger for both yourself as well as other surfers. Your failure to duck drive will get you caught by bigger set waves. And in turn it can either leave you in the line up or the impact zone thronged by fellow surfers. And it will be not only a disturbing but also a dangerous situation for everybody.
In a worse case scenario, you can even have your board ripped out of your hands or even bail your board when the waves will approach you. Please remember that until and unless you are able to duck drive properly, just keep yourself out of the take off spot, powerful breaking waves and other surfers. Please also make sure that you must not bail your board at a spot where you have fellow surfers paddling or duck driving behind you.
Paddling out is an integral part of surfing. However, if you fail to make it out, you might find yourself trapped precisely in the spot where other surfers are surfing. In case a spot gets crowded with many surfers, then the situation will witness experienced surfers being forced to dodge the beginners like you. And it is likely to be dangerous. According to unwritten surfing rules, a surfer must always try to paddle out around the spot dubbed as the impact zone. In case you do not have the access to the same, then you must paddle in the direction of the breaking wave, and certainly not in the direction of the shoulder of the wave. It means that you must leave the open wave for those surfers who are coming down the line in the direction of the white water, with the objective to duck dive.
Please remember that the surfer located closest to the wave's breaking part will always have the priority. As a beginner or learner you must first look both ways before you start paddling for wave. And you simply can not proceed if somebody else is on the wave.
Always remember that leg ropes are must every time you are surfing with lots of people in the water. In case a board gets lost out in the ocean, it is likely to injure another surfer or swimmer while getting washed in. And yes, as a beginner you must also wear a leash.
Do not get driven by zeal, enthusiasm or ego to paddle out even when you know that it is too tough for you. You will eventually end up forcing other surfers endangering themselves to perform your rescue operation. As a surfer you must be conscious about your limits, and do not dare to fiddle with the ocean even when you know it is not your cup of tea.
Please do not get in the water in the first place if you are unable to swim out to the breaking waves and then swim back without the help of a surfboard. As per unwritten surfing rules, you must not go for surfing unless you know how to swim and have at least the basic surfing fitness.
It is imperative that before going for surfing you learn to respect the ocean and share the surf with everyone. Many beginners learn surfing on big long boards, and are very smart in paddling catch waves and stand up. Please remember that merely being able to catch a wave and stand up does not mean that every wave is meant for you. Never forget that a fundamental rule of surfing is sharing the vibes and the waves with your fellow surfers.
So prepare yourself, physically and mentally, before you go out to surf Blog, article, and other sources may be consulted for getting more insight into the sport.
