Start Scuba Diving

There are a huge number of scuba dive sites around the world where you can practise the sport of scuba diving.  At some scuba dive sites you can simply walk into the fresh water lake or enter ocean from the shore line.  Some other scuba dive sites you can only reach by boat.  Options are by luxury live aboard yacht where your every need is catered for (they even wash your scuba dive gear for you) or you can rough it on an inflatable boat (some call it a rubber duck).  As a scuba diver you can dive coral reefs, ship wrecks, follow great migrations like the Sardine Run in South Africa and even do shark dives.  But before you can do this there is a lot you need to learn about scuba diving and you have to be a certified scuba diver to dive with a scuba dive charter.

So how do you start scuba diving?

The easiest way is to ask your friends where they became scuba divers, or if you don't have such friends you can make use of websites such as http://www.divedeals.co.za that lists the local Southern African scuba dive businesses by region.

The next step is to contact the local scuba diving schools in your area or if you plan to make a scuba diving holiday out of it you can contact the scuba dive schools at your holiday destination.  These scuba dive schools will tell you all about how they run their class room sessions, pool sessions, open water dives and finally the open water scuba diver exam.

Did you know you can also do a try before you buy?  Many scuba diving schools will show you a short introductory DVD about scuba diving, kit you up with the necessary scuba dive gear and take you into their pool for a scuba experience, just to let you feel how it is to breathe under water.  You can only do this with a qualified scuba dive instructor or a qualified dive master that has been approved to do discover scuba diving sessions.

Do not buy your scuba dive gear before the time as you will send a lot of money down the drain, your scuba dive instructor will tell you what to look for.  Make sure you understand the costs involved in the particular scuba dive course that you are interested in.

Scuba diving is a fun, recreational and social sport, make sure you find a scuba dive club to belong to as you get to spend quality time with fellow scuba divers, learn from experienced divers and get honest opinions on scuba dive gear.  Read my other article on choosing the right scuba diving club.

If you don't have time to attend the class room sessions you can also complete an online scuba diving program, but you still have to see a scuba dive instructor for you pool dive and open water sessions.

After completing your initial open water scuba diver course you can go on and become an advanced diver, rescue diver, dive master or open water scuba instructor, the scuba diving fun never ends.

That's it; this is how easy it is to become international recognised scuba diver.

Happy diving…
