Catalonia promotes itself as top Mediterranean scuba diving destination

Europe's most beautiful and famous beach resorts but the Mediterranean waters that bathe its shores are also a scuba diver's paradise.. Teeming with rich marine life and optimum conditions for scuba diving, the north-eastern region of Spain is a fantastic scuba diving destination with plenty of scuba diving sites to explore.

Popular scuba diving spots in the Spanish region include Los Ullastres in Girona, where avid scuba divers can discover its fascinating underwater mountains while in the Costa Dorada beach resort in Tarragona there are a number of shipwrecks to explore. However you plan out your scuba diving holidays to Catalonia, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding amazing places for diving into.

While Barcelona is best known as a popular city break destination and most tourists tend to head to the outskirts for the most popular Catalan beach resorts, you might be surprised to learn that for locals the city's waterfront also an extremely popular diving area.

Just 15km from the city centre, Costa Barcelona is a top scuba diving spot for amateur divers and professionals alike seeking to find an array of colourful sea creatures, venture into amazing underwater caves and perhaps, with a bit of luck, spotting the occasional dolphin.

And if you venture out of Barcelona and head to Girona's popular Costa Brava you can find the La Sirena Diving Centre, located close to one of Spain's most spectacular scuba diving sites. This site is comprised of a seven-island archipelago known as Medas Islands which are found a mile off L'Estartit port. These virginal islands offer divers with unique scuba diving experiences in what is regarded as one of the most beautiful scuba diving spots in the world. Because of its unique and attractive location, ease of access and splendid marine life, this scuba diving site has been included in many scuba diving guides.

Last but certainly not least, with as many as 638 beaches with the prestigious Blue Flag status in Spain, there's no wonder as to why Spanish beaches are considered some of the best in Europe and some of the most well-preserved in the world.
