Scuba diving gives us the chance to experience an entire, unique world within our own. The feeling of being underwater and the life that lives there can only be experienced if one is willing to go for it and learn to dive.
Everytime you put your mask on, deflate your BC and start down you are anticipating seeing something extrodinary. On most dives you will be rewarded. You just never know what you might see.
That truth takes on a whole new perspective when you dive in Palau. Five-hundred miles east of the Philippines in Micronesia, this Pacific island nation has long been a dream destination for underwater adventurers. You'll be diving dramatic drop-offs, blue holes, psychedelic reefs of every type, World War II wrecks and see so many species of fish (1,250-plus).
Among the best commercial dives in Palau is a dive called the Blue Corner. Jacques Cousteau once called the Big Drop-Off (Blue Corner) "the world's best wall dive."
One of the reasons this is such a great dive is that it is a protected area and has been for many years. Over the years the fish are used to seeing divers so the fear factor is much different. You can swim right up to schools of fish without them bolting away.
The dive itself is a drift dive. The geography underwater is a large peninsula so a current runs along the island and moves the divers along the cliff wall. When you first drop down underwater you will be shocked at all the sea life that's there. It's as though you were dropped into a tank at Marineland. Turtles, manta rays, eagle rays and Napoleon wrass are not uncommon. Large Dogtooth tuna, triggerfish, Clown Triggers, schooling barracuda, jacks, and many species of butterfly fish. There are sharks everywhere. Bold sharks that enjoy swimming by very close. As you sit and watch the show along the wall you might just come across a huge grouper hiding in a cave. The whole scene is like a cartoon in more than living color. There is so much going on it's hard to see half of it.
After you drift around the point you'll enter into a calm area. The fish also enjoy the benefits of that calm area so it is an area so full of fish it just doesn't look real.
The only problem when making this dive is you will compare the dives you take for the rest of your life with that Blue Corner dive. Unless you find another "best in the world" dive site, I don't believe you'll find a better dive in your life.
