The aircraft was experiencing mechanical difficulties and was abandoned by its crew in March 1943, while it was on a military mission in the Mediterranean. The aeroplane consequently sank off  the Dragonara Point. Today the wreck lies at a depth of 37m/121ft and is inhabited by a variety of marine species. The aircraft is still in good condition. One of its propellers is still intact and is lying together with its wings and centre fuselage on the sandy bottom with its engine partly buried.
