Top Tips On Scuba Diving Mask Maintenance

Of all the fun and adventurous sports out there, scuba diving is one of the most rewarding activities. After just a few indoor training sessions and shallow dives with a good trainer, one is ready to explore the underwater world of shimmering light on one's own! Most scuba divers are hooked to diving because they love the view.

A scuba diving mask creates an air pocket between your face and the water, making it possible for you to enjoy the underwater view. But that's not all it also protects your eyes from the salty sea water. Whether you are simply snorkeling or diving deep, you need to strap on a divers mask before you embark on your underwater journey. If you want the snorkeling mask to behave properly on your dive, you need to care for it. How to do it? How to make sure that the mask doesn't fog? The following tips will help you:

Initial Cleaning: Scuba diving mask demands care right from day one. Your new dive mask will come covered in labels. Also, there is a chance of oily residue silicone hanging on to the straps or lenses. These liquids may cause the mask to fog up during your dive or they may make it slip during the dive. So, you must clean the new mask well before using it. There are several mask scrubs and non-abrasive detergents that you can use for this purpose. Or you could simply clean it with your index finger, using gel toothpaste.

Regular Cleaning: The snorkel mask is bound to catch some salt and grime during the dive. This harms the silicone and rubber parts. Cleaning your mask with fresh water between dives is a good way of minimizing degradation. If you always rinse your mask after dives, it will last longer and smell better.

While Traveling: When you travel between the diving sites, the scuba diving mask is likely to gather more dirt particles from the air. For best results, you should clean the masks and put them into a special scuba gear bag. But that can get rather tedious. In this case, keep a fresh water bucket handy and soak your mask in the fresh water before cleaning it thoroughly.

Defogging: Nothing is more annoying and depressing than a scuba mask that fogs over again and again. To make sure that your mask never fogs up, you must use a defogging solution before every dive. You can buy such solutions from any scuba diving equipment shop. Simply squeeze two drops of the solution and rub the inside of the mask using your fingers. In case you do not have such a solution, you can use you saliva as a defogging solution.

In addition to these basic tips, there are several common sense precautions that you can take. Do not place your snorkeling mask face-down if you want to avoid scratches, keep it away from direct sunlight, place it in a special hard case to avoid abrasions, and always clean with freshwater after use. As long as you follow these basic scuba mask maintenance tips, you will not have to worry about your dive mask.
