Whilst cycling is amazing fun in itself, it's undeniable that the sport also offers considerable advantages in terms of fitness. Indeed, according to recent research, regular cycling can have dramatic effects on your body, keeping you in better physical shape, with greater resistance to aging.
If you're keen to find out how to maximise your levels of fitness using your trusty hybrid bikes, UK cyclocross bikes and more, read on!
Cyclists ‘younger' than non-cyclists
First, a piece of impressive research. According to a study carried out at Kings College, London, many cyclists aged between 55 to 79 were found to be both physically and biologically much fitter than their non-cycling counterparts.
The study, which included 81 male and 41 female participants, tested heart and lung functionality, metabolic rate and hormone function; and also measured their muscle and bone strength. Those who cycled regularly had the muscle strength, lung capacity and fitness levels of someone far younger than themselves.

Hybrid bikes UK, cyclocross bikes… which one for fitness?
In short, any form of cycling is going to be beneficial for your fitness; and even if you only use your hybrid bike to get to work each morning, it's still going to offer some form of health benefit.
However, if you're serious about getting into shape using your trusty bike, then consider the following:
1) Mountain biking. Challenge yourself when cycling. Don't just stick to the easy routes. Instead, aim for trails that incorporate steep inclines or more challenging terrain. You may find that you need a specialist bike should you decide to go off-road and into the wilderness.
2)Cyclocross bikes. If you want to get fit, get racing! Cyclocross Bikes are custom-designed for cross racing, a really fun sport which allows you to test your muscles on muddy courses, with various sections for running smooth. They're a popular choice of fitness bike, and well suited to those looking to get in shape.
3) Push harder. If you don't yet feel ready to partake in races or face mountain tracks, the simple answer is to do what you're already doing; but do it harder. Aim to pedal a bit faster, to push a bit harder, or to go a bit further. Every little bit of extra effort helps.
