Mountain Biking Tips for Beginners

Mountain biking is a tough sport. It is not something you just decide to do without any preparation on your part. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your first mountain bike ride.

  1. Pick an easy trail. As earlier mentioned, mountain biking is a tough sport. It requires stamina, muscle strength, presence of mind and the right gear. As a beginner, you wouldn't want to pick a steep mountain to climb to immediately. It might turn you off on the whole mountain biking if you find it hard to do.
  2. Get the right gear. A good mountain bike should fit you well has parts that are made specifically for rough terrain. Find a good bike dealer and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.
  3. Get the right safety gear. When you are biking off road, there are so many unexpected accidents you can get into. Wear your helmet at all times while you are biking. Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and reapply as you rest. Wear polarized shades to see the trail clearly under the bright sun. Wear gloves to protect your hands as you grip the handles. Wear clothing that's appropriate for mountain biking. Have a first small first aid kit on hand for emergencies.
  4. Speaking of safety, when you talk about mountain biking you'd sometimes think about getting lost in the woods or getting into an accident while biking alone. Do not bike alone unless you are already an experienced biker who knows the terrain like the back of their hand. Bring a cellphone with you. You'll never know when you need to call for help or take a selfie once you reach the top of the mountain. Find a buddy who is already knowledgeable in the path that you want to take. There are many groups of mountain bikers that you can also join.
  5. Prepare yourself physically. If you are already active then you are already in the right direction. Mountain biking can be exhausting if you don't have the strength or the stamina. Do some cardio or some weight lifting in the gym to prepare you for your first ride.
  6. Sit on the saddle when going uphill and stand on the pedals when going downhill. Sitting on the saddle while going uphill takes less effort. Standing allows your leg and knees to absorb the shock instead of your rear.
  7. Don't think of it is a competition. Think about mountain biking as a sport that's between you, your bike and the mountain. Do not mind other mountain bikers as they pass you. It is not a race (unless you have joined one). Nobody will mind if you take your time mountain biking.
  8. Take a rest often. As a beginner, you are not expected to ride on your mountain bike without stopping. Take a rest every so often to recharge and drink. This will help you hydrate and keep your strength.
  9. Rest your hands on the handle bars and not the brakes. This reduces the urge to brake at the slightest movements on the path.
  10. Have fun! Enjoy your ride and be one with nature.
