Scandals are attracting attention to football for all the wrong reasons

Football is a sport that generates a lot of attention (and money), and some of that attention is for all the wrong reasons: scandals abound in the world of football. Once football became big business, the focus slipped from the game, and now the limelights are away from the pitch. The scandals involving match fixing, sex and drugs are capturing the attention of the audience around the world - whether they actually follow the game or not!

 
Some may say that big money corrupted "the beautiful game", but the world of football was never devoid of its scandals. And while there are some really serious issues surrounding the game, such as apparent racism on the pitch and the accusations of matches being fixed, sex and drug scandals are always the favorites of tabloids and their audience around the world.

Global game has global scandals. Many footballers were accused of taking drugs; some publicly admitted to using illegal substances. Cocaine certainly seems to be a popular drug amongst the footballers (and in some instances, with their coaches too!). There were multiple players who tested positive for banned steroids and similar performance-enhancing drugs. Even the football legends managed to get their reputations tarnished this way. Diego Maradona was never a stranger to scandals, but when he tested positive on a drug test at the World Cup in 1994, that marked the end of his long international career in football.

There is also no lack of footballers being involved in alleged sex scandals. Many were involved in the affairs and got caught. Ashley Cole denied multiple infidelity accusations multiple times - until his explicit photos leaked out to the public. Even David Backham, a footballer with the most carefully built family man image, couldn't manage to stay out of infidelity accusations on two separate occasions.

Footballers such as Ronaldo managed to get involved into both a sex and a drug scandal - all at once! Ronaldo got into the unwanted spotlight when he took three transvestites into his house. When it turned out that they are not of the gender that the footballer thought they are, the trio asked for money to keep silent about the rendezvous. Obviously, that arrangement didn't work out well, because some time later the trio also accused Ronaldo of snorting cocaine while being in their merry company.
