Awarding the winners of competitive events with trophies is a tradition that is centuries old. Today there are several iconic trophies in a variety of sports that are globally recognisable. Athletes commit many years of their lives to stand the chance to lift some of these trophies. Being rewarded with the honour of receiving a hundred year old trophy can be the crowning achievement in the career of a sportsman.
One of the more recognisable trophies around the world of sport is the Stanley Cup. It's given each year to the winners of the Stanley Cup finals. There are various traditions and legends that surrounds the Stanley cup. Probably the most well known traditions started way back in 1896 once the victorious team, the Winnipeg Victorias ceremoniously drank champagne out of the cup. It's a tradiotion that is still practiced today, but is becoming more and more difficult as the cup has gotten bigger over the years. This is largely due to the fact that the names of all of the winning players, coaches and backroom staff get added onto the cup every year. The Bowl on top of the Stanley Cup is actually an exact silver and nickel replica of the one used in the very beginning. The original was physically awarded to the winning team until 1970, when it found a brand new home inside the National hockey League hall of fame. The original bowl is 8 inches high, and 11 inches across. The cup used today is about 35 inches tall and weighs almost 35 pounds. You can see why it's a little trickier to drink champagne out of it now. The Stanley cup is furthermore the only major North American sports trophy that is not made each year. In the MLB, NBA and NFL a new trophy is made for the champions each year. In the NHL the Stanley cup is passed on to the new champions.
The Stanley cup can also be considered one of the most travelled trophies in Global sports. In the past five years it's travelled an astounding 400000 miles. In 2007 it actually travelled to Afghanistan with the Canadian forces. A hockey game between former NHL players and Canadian soldiers was organised and played on a concrete rink in the desert.
