Basketball is a really popular sport in the United States and also all over the world. This is a game that is played on a rectangular court and there are 5 members in a team and two teams play against each other on the basketball court. On each ends of the court there is a Basketball hoop or basket that is mounted 10 meters high to a backboard. The sport is about the players trying to shoot the ball through the hoop while the other team defends the basket. There are as mentioned above 5 players per team and each player is assigned a key role while playing the game. Players dribble the basket ball towards their hoop at the opposite end while the opposing team tries and defends the hoop and also tries to take away the ball so that they can go shoot the ball in their hoop. In basketball the players cannot hold the ball in their hand for a long time and have to constantly be dribbling the ball. When the players score a basket, points are awarded based on from which position the player got the basketball through the hoop.
Positions of the Players & the Purpose of Each Position
Point Guard
Point Guard is quite a standard basketball position. Basically the role of the point guard is to handle the team’s offense. This means that the basketball player needs to control the basketball and also make sure that it is passed to the right player at the right time in order for the team to score a basket and earn points.
Shooting Guard
The Shooting Guard is a player that scores the maximum points for the team. The Shooting Guard position is an offense position in basketball. Generally these players can score shots from long ranged positions also well including the 3 pointers which give the team 3 points for one shot. Their role also includes guarding the opponents best perimeter player on defense.
Small Forward
This is another traditional position in basketball and is a very versatile position in basketball. The responsibility of the players in this position is to try and steal the ball from the opposition, dribble it forward and take it to a more offense position and also score shots on rebound.
Power Forward
This is a traditional basketball position in which the players play a largely offense oriented role with their backs to the basket. In their defense role, these players either play “in the zone defense” meaning under the opponent’s basket or man to man against the opposing team’s power forward.
