New York Yankees and history of their pin stripped uniform

The New York Yankees are instantly recognizable with their pin stripped jerseys. This is not the uniform they started with more than 100 years ago. Neither was the team was known by its present name. The short lived Baltimore Orioles was called the Yankees when team moved to the New York City. The jersey of the baseball team has undergone a number of modifications during the course of time.

New York Yankees' pin stripped uniform over the years

The beginning 1903

The first uniform of the team had "NY" written on the uniform on the front. N and Y were written on either side of buttons. They wore a white belt and a cap with the panels white and the bill colored. The stockings were plain, of the same color. There were no stripes on it.

1904-10

The 1903 uniform continued to be worn by the team in the 1904 season. 1905 saw a big change in the uniform of the Yankees. NY was scrunched together and placed on the left side of the buttons. They used black socks instead of navy blue. In 1907 the team wore the type of uniform for both home and away games. The next year also some changes to the uniform. This time white-with-gray-sleeves uniform was worn by players for home matches and the opposite pattern for away games. In the 1909 and 1900 seasons the team wore black cap with an orange NY (interlocked) on it. Classic NY imprints was also designed on the white sleeves jersey. Dark gray jerseys were used for the away games.

1911-1920

In 1911 Yankees went for minimum designs and color on the uniform. The home baseball uniform had white jersey. Away uniform was gray in color with interlocking NY on the jersey. Yankees had also an alternative uniform with NY written across the chest.

1912 was the year when the team used pin stripped uniform for home games. A large interlocking NY design featured on the left side chest. Gray colored uniform was for away games with NY at the same spot and same font. The pin stripped uniform was dumped in 1913 only to make a comeback in 1915. This time pinstriped uniform was used for both home and away games. In 1918 pin stripped deign was stopped being used on uniform used for away games.

1921-1930

In 1927, the "New York" on away uniform gave way to a smaller name "Yankees". It is the first team to have numbers on their baseball jerseys on permanent basis for the first time. Cleveland is the first team to have numbers on their uniform.

1931-1950

In 1936 interlocking NY made a comeback on the baseball uniform of the team. There were some minor changes to the space and font. This uniform was very much like the present type the Yankees players wear for games. After that period there were not many changes in the uniform.

Thus the pin stripped uniform became an identity of the New York Yankees.
