A note on basketball jersey and its history

1891-1920

For the first 25-30 years of game, players wore woolen shirts and baggy trousers. There was nothing particular about the design of the wear. 1921-1940

Rubber soled converse shoes were worn by the players.

1940-1960

This was the time when woolen wears were discontinued in almost all sports. Woolen jersey was too hot and difficult to clean. Polyester/nylon replaced wool for manufacturing sports uniform. The material being shiny and durable become poplar fabric for making track-style jerseys and satin briefs.

1961-1988

Keeping with the national dressing trend, basket uniform got tighter, while the socks grew longer. Manufacturing material become more comfortable as it was a blend of polyester and cotton. This made the uniform more breathable and easy on skin. Besides, the dresses became more colorful. Head band was also introduced during this period by payers who sported longer hair. Soon players with short hair also opted for bands.

1988-2012

You may be looking for this section, the era of Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan asked for his shorts to be longer than usual so that he could clutch something when bending over out of breath. Soon other players opted for the same kind of shorts. This resulted in knee length shorts for basket ball players. The trend still continues. The uniform got more comfortable, stretchable and better at absorbing sweat.
