Golf can be a rather relaxing sport, it can even be a stress reliever when you take to the driving range but by and far the most stressful moments are not the long bomb drives but the smallest and most demanding putts. Short putts can be the difference between a win and a loss and many golfers underestimate the importance of a strong finish until it’s too late.
The putt is one of the easiest shots to practice ,but the pressure of a competitive game can throw all of your practice out the window as the palms begin to sweat and your arms begin to shake. It is well worth spending time before every game of golf taking a few practice putts on the putting green. Most golf courses have a putting green to allow you to practice the power and angle required for many common putting situations such as putting up hill, downhill or on a slant.
The long putts can be the hardest to read and will often require you to stoop down to get a good impression of the hills and valleys your ball will have to negotiate en route to the hole. After a few practices you should begin to get a feel of how much power to put behind the ball each time you take a putt, no matter how far away you are.
One of the key problems golfers have is dropping a shot or what is commonly known as a three putt. Typically you are recommended to use one putt to get close to the hole and one to sink the ball as a maximum you should be hitting on each hole. Missing that second putt can lead to another putt which can hurt your score significantly if you are doing this on numerous holes per game.
There are a lot of golfers and so there are many different swing styles. You find that many golfers hit the ball differently and the wide range of different putters can help your chosen style or hinder it if you purchase incorrectly. When buying a putter you should be aiming to make sure that you are comfortable and that the putter feels natural in your hands.
Many golf shops have a practice hole to test the putter out on, you should always look into at least one of each style before purchasing as you want a putter that will help you make smooth putts and enough power to carry it for those long distance putts as well as the shorter, controlled precision putts.
