How should I seal the new cedar fence?

Preparing the Fence

1. Wait for ideal weather. Avoid sealing your fence on a hot, humid day, or when rain is imminent. The best time to seal a cedar fence is on a cool, dry day with low humidity.

2. Clean the fence. Remove any dirt, dust, or debris from the fence with a power washer or a garden hose. Allow the fence to dry thoroughly before sealing.

3. Sand the fence. Lightly sand the fence with 120-grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots or splinters. This will help the sealer adhere better to the wood.

4. Let the fence dry completely. Make sure the fence is completely dry before staining.

Sealing the Fence

1. Choose a sealer. There are a variety of sealers available for cedar fences, so choose one that is specifically designed for this type of wood. Some popular options include oil-based sealers, water-based sealers, and semi-transparent stains.

2. Apply the sealer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the sealer. Some sealers can be applied with a brush, roller, or sprayer.

3. Allow the sealer to dry. Allow the sealer to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. This could take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

Tips for Maintaining a Cedar Fence

1. Inspect the fence regularly. Look for any signs of damage, such as cracks, splits, or rot.

2. Clean the fence regularly. Remove any dirt, dust, or debris from the fence with a garden hose or power washer.

3. Reapply the sealer as needed. The frequency with which you need to reapply the sealer will depend on the type of sealer you used and the climate in which you live.
