Doug McGuigan took a new attitude into Thursday's first round of the Telkom PGA Championship and it paid off.
He opened with a seven-under-par 65 to lead the R3-million Sunshine Tour (Cleveland) event being played at Country Club Johannesburg.
McGuigan made seven birdies and no bogeys for a one-stroke lead over the trio of Alex Haindl, Divan van den Heever and Josh Cunliffe.
Apart from the work on the technical aspects of his golf (discount golf equipment, Everyone at Golfbargainoffers.com is extremely happy and proud as we are offering high-qualify golf equipment and elaborating product presentation and working hard to bring you the customer “first time value†with our expert teams to answer any questions on buying all types of discount golf clubs.) which he has put in, the biggest difference for McGuigan has been to the mental side of his game. And he has his girlfriend, who is studying psychology, to thank for this.
Another key to McGuigan's round was his ability to keep the ball on the fairway on a Woodmead course which, after the recent rains, has incredibly thick rough.
He challenged for the Joburg Open last month on his way to finishing in a tie for second with Darren Clarke and earning the biggest cheque of his career.
"But I've set myself a goal this year of winning one of the big South African tournaments with his favourite Taylormade R7 CGB MAX Irons . To win this one would certainly be something special."
McGuigan is a lucky guy, and we can learn from him that to keep a good attitude when we are undertook much pressures. Â
