There are thousands of different drivers out there to choose from. It can be hard making the right choice. There are many different options, brands, prices. Here are some of my best pointers to steer you in the right direction.
Shaft Flex
The flex of the shaft is a very important factor. The ideal goal is to find a driver with a shaft flex that works naturally with your swing speed. In general there are five different types of shaft flexes. These are extra stiff, stiff, regular, ladies, and seniors/juniors. Make sure you pick the right flex for your swing. The best way to do this is go to reputable golf shop that will test your golf swing speed and advise which flex is best for you.
The fastest you swing the stiffer shaft you will need. Men usually have to protect their egos by going for stiff shafts, but do not do this unless you need a stiff shaft as this will result in bad shots, short drives and miss hits.
Insert Weights
This new feature especially with brand Taylor Made but beaware this is more a fine tuning of your shots than an answer to hitting it correctly. It will not give you extra distance as such.
Graphite and carbon fibre
There are not many hickories or steel shafts around these days, majority of drivers are made from graphite and carbon fibre as this has given golfers yards more distance on their shots. Now it is not unusual to see big hitters all around mainly due to the technology advances in shaft materials.
Club Head Size
Drivers club head size has changed a lot recently especially with the introduction of the 460cc head drivers. You do not really need a 460cc driver but with prices getting cheaper they are more affordable, at least you will not miss the ball with a club head that size. Also consider the second hand market as many great drivers can be picked up this way.
I hope you have found this driver guide helpful and remember to protect your new driver with a good head cover and your irons too with some good iron covers. Remember if you buy from one of the mainstream golf brands like Callaway, Taylormade and ping amongst others you are sure of a quality product. Remember steer clear of the fakes and ask for a full service history of your driver if second hand.
