Her's How You Can Take 5 Shots Off Of Your Golf Score

All of us would like to take 5 shots off of our golf scores. It is really not that hard.  All you have to do is to improve your short game around the green.

Think about it.  The last round of golf you played, I would bet you could easily find 5 shots around the green that you could have saved with just a bit better striking of the ball. We'll start with your putting. How many three putt greens did you have?  How many chips did you hit that gave you an easy putt, but you missed it?

Next is chipping.  How many easy chips did you have where you felt you should have gotten the ball close enough for a one putt, but didn't?  Finally, how many chip shots did you have where you were so far from the hole that you couldn't two putt? (Even though you should have.)

Add up your shots around the green and you will probably find that they come to about half the golf shots you hit in that round.  So if you shot a 90, you probably hit around 45 short shots.  How difficult would it be to save 5 of those shots?

It is not difficult.  All you need to do is to get yourself to your golf course fifteen minutes earlier than you are doing now, and spend that extra time around the green hitting chip shots and putts.  Let me put it a different way.

Allow yourself a half an hour of practice before each round.  Hit maybe ten or so full shots, but not more, and then go to the practice green.  Spend half of the remaining time hitting chip shots and half hitting putts.  When chipping if the green is both up hill and down hill, make sure to hit chip shots going both ways.  If you are not permitted to chip on the practice green, spend that same amount of time hitting chip shots on the practice range, but making sure to hit towards a specific target.

On the putting green hit a number of long putts, both up hill and down hill.  Then practice straight putts from about six feet, working on hitting the ball straight to the hole. Another good drill is starting by hitting three balls from about three feet.  After you sink three in a row, move to six feet, and then nine feet.  If you miss a putt along the way, go back to three feet and start again.

Practice your short golf game this way before each round and you will begin to drop off shots each round.  Before long your handicap will go down at least 5 strokes.  And you certainly will be having more fun playing golf.
