John Rollins, the American picked up seven birdies on the Seaside Course, including four in a row from the 14th to the 17 holes, to lead by one shot from compatriots Troy Merritt and David Toms, who both started their rounds on the back nine.
Merritt also shot seven birdies, but was denied a share of the lead by a bogey five on the 18th, while Toms picked up eight birdies but also had to settle for a 64 after opening and closing his round with bogeys.
Rollins revealed a stern talk from his wife had helped motivate him as he looks to improve his results to play his way onto next year's Presidents Cup team.
"When I missed the BMW and had the four weeks off, my wife and I had a chance to sit down and talk about some things," Rollins said on www.pgatour.com.
"She told me to make the team. Just practice harder, work harder. I expect a lot out of myself but sometimes don't put the necessary effort in there to get it out of there."
Three more Americans, Joe Durant, Michael Letzig and Rich Barcelo, followed in a tie for fourth on five under.
Durant recovered from bogeying the 14th which left him on two under by picking up three birdies on 15, 16 and 17.
Letzig also had six birdies and a bogey, while Barcelo did not drop a shot.
Two more players from the United States, Justin Leonard and Heath Slocum, Sweden's Mathias Gronberg and Aron Price of Australia, were in a four-way tie for seventh on four under.
American Ryder Cup team members Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson carded a 67 and a 70 respectively.
Kuchar's round would have been even better had he not had a double bogey six at the 16th.
