You are reading this because putting, like me, kicks your butt. Putting use to be the worst part of my game, and I was well above the average of 8 to 10 times per 18 hole round. This was before I decided to bunker down and start practicing at least one hour per week.
The following are the drills I used to dramatically lower my golf scores. The following drills/games I used are:
Ladder Game
My biggest problem was distance control. I was either leaving a 20 foot putt 10 feet short, or I would have a 10 foot putt after having a 6 foot putt.
I was awful. So one of the games I started playing with myself is the ladder game. The ladder game is a game where you try to see how many balls you can get within a certain distance. I set mine up like this.
I made it to where I had to putt the ball at least 5 feet, and I set the limit to 20 feet. So there is a 15 foot gap of where I have to putt it. The rules are that you have to putt each ball farther than the last. If you leave it short, you lose.
Set goals for yourself. Mine was to work up to getting 10 balls within that fifteen foot gap. After I did that, I started working my way backwards. My goal was to go all the way to the 20 foot mark with 10 balls, then work my way back to the five foot mark with 10 more balls.
It is a lot harder than you think.
Fringe Game
This is another game I use to practice the distance control and get a smooth stroke. For this drill I used 5 tees. One tee at 3 feet, 5 feet, 10 feet, 15 feet, 20 feet, and 25 feet. From each tee I would practice hitting a golf ball and getting it to stay right on the fringe of where the green meets the fairway or surrounding grass.
This is a great little game to get your mind focused on a smooth stroke instead of continuously making putts. It is very relaxing compared to trying to make putts over and over and over.
If you can practice and master these two drills, like I did, I am confident that you will start making more putts, help eliminate three putts, and see lower golf scores.
