The Two factors that will lead to lower scores and reduced putts per round are a confident putting attitude and a putting routine that you can repeat for every putt. A confident attitude around the green will not remove the nervous feeling as you stand over the putt but it will provide you with confidence. To improve your confidence you need a routine to read the slopes on the green, determine the direction, and the speed for the putt. Practicing this routine on a putting green at the golf course or your favorite driving range will build your confidence and you will make more putts.
The best way to read a green includes looking at the direction of the grass and the slopes around the ball and hole as you walk up to on to the green. You should look to determine if you have a flat putt, uphill putt, a downhill putt, or a cross slope putt. Now you are ready to review the grass length to help determine whether it is going to be a slow putt or a fast putt. Take into count each of these factors to help you determine the putt's line and speed. Even this factor can be practiced on a putting mat.
Next is to figure out the force to apply to the back of the golf ball with the putter head so it rolls on line to the hole and into the hole. You want to feel the force in your hands and to transmit it to your shoulders so the shoulders move back the length necessary to impart the right force.
Now move your shoulders back for the force you want to apply and square up the putter head at the point of impact so the golf ball rolls the right distance. You want the putter head to be accelerating when it strikes the ball so it rolls at the right speed and in the right direction. If the putter head decelerates the ball will roll off line and will not have enough speed.
Ben Crenshaw known as a great putter in his own right states, "that great putters were never concerned about the putting stroke but the line and the speed as they prepared to make the putt."
The best way to lower your total score per round is to reduce the quantity of putts. So go off and reduce the quantity of putts through practicing these key putting factors on a practice green or an indoor putting mat. Suggest you practice your putting several times a week for about 15 minutes per session.
