Getting started in golf is not as difficult as you may think. However there are many pitfalls to be avoided and many beginner golf tips to be heeded before you venture out unto the course. Golf is one of the few games which can be enjoyed just as much when you are 70 as when are 7, so starting off on the right foot will save you years of frustration and give you years of fun.
Beginner Golf Tips #1: Don't Rush
The first thing most people do is rush out and buy the best set of clubs they can afford. This is a big mistake. There are no golf clubs for beginners. Certainly some golf clubs will be easier to use than others but there are no specific golf clubs for beginners.
Beginner Golf Tips #2: There Are No Golf Clubs For Beginners
There are so many, different club manufacturers out there ( at least 120) trying to convince you that their clubs will make you hit the ball further and straighter than the others. As a beginner, the make or type of club will make very little difference to you if any at all.
Each of the club manufacturers will make several different models. Each model will have different specifications (different types of shaft being the main one). Each variation is aimed at different skill levels and abilities. .
Each of these models can then be customized to fit the individual golfer. Type of grip, grip size, type of shaft, length of shaft and angle and lie of the club head being the main ones.
Beginner Golf Tips #3: Make Do
So, as a beginner, you will have no idea at this early stage which type of club will suit you best. All you need now are clubs that will "do" you until you have learned the basics. Buying expensive clubs will more than likely be a waste of your money. So the best beginner golf tips are resist the urge and don't rush out and buy a brand new set of clubs.
Beginner Golf Tips #4: Getting Your First Set Of Clubs
You do have a few alternatives when it comes to getting your first set of clubs. I am fairly certain that you will know someone who will have at least one spare set of clubs. If you have friends who play golf I guarantee some if not all of them will have spare clubs and they will be only too glad to lend/give them to you until it is time to get your own. If they don't have clubs they will know someone who does. These are the ideal golf clubs for beginners.
Failing that there is a thriving market in second hand clubs. You can pick up a decent set of golf clubs for beginners for little money online, ebay, for example. Your local club or driving range will usually have many sets of second hand clubs for beginners and can advise you on which to buy. There are always clubs available at local markets and garage sales. Provided the clubs are in reasonable condition that is all you need to get started. You can also try classified ads in your local papers.
Beginner Golf Tips #5: Try Before You Buy
Failing all that, you can usually hire clubs at your local club or driving range. Many will let you try out some clubs until you are ready to commit to buying your own. Once you are ready to buy, most retailers or pros will have demonstration clubs which you can try out on the course or on the range before you have to buy. It is only when you use your club for "real" that you will know if it suits you or not.
Beginner Golf Tips #6: Focus On Learning The Basics
As a beginner don't worry too much about buying clubs. There is plenty of time for that later on. Your priority in the early stages is to get out there and learn the basics of the golf swing. The sooner you get to grips with these basics the sooner you can get on the course.
