4 Amazing Tips For Making Short Putts

4 Amazing Tips For Making Short Putts

Let's be honest, missing short putts on a regular basis can be one of the most frustrating feelings in golf. Many potentially excellent rounds are destroyed buy the inability to consistently hole out from the three foot range. It's no secret that if you are looking to improve your overall golf game, 'holing out' from short distances is an important component for shooting lower scores. So the question is how can you improve your percentage of making short putts? Well below I have listed a few tips that have greatly helped me when it comes to converting the dreaded 'Knee Knockers'.

1. Accelerate The Putter Head - Far too often people become tentative when faced with shorter putts, the key is to accelerate the putter head through the ball, if anything your follow through should be longer than your takeaway.

2. Take The Break Out - Very simple but don't look for too much break in the putt. Sometimes a straighter, aggressive line will reap rewards. I tend to aim at the back of the hole when looking to the hit the ball in with authority.

3. Relax Your Grip - Often overlooked, but if your missing lots of putts within three feet, tension can start to creep into your fingers greatly increasing the strength of your putting grip. This causes inconsistent strikes leading to even more missed putts. Try to maintain a light grip.

4. Don't Go Looking For The Ball - The amount of short putts that are missed either by looking for the ball hitting the hole, usually causes lifting of the head before the stroke is complete. Tiger Woods is great example of keeping his head perfectly still and maintaining a solid base until the ball has reached the hole. Try it next time you play.

After I adopted some of these tips, noticed a remarkable improvement in my consistency for making short putts. This is such an important area to get right and I feel my consistency has improved by 20 - 30 % from within the three foot range. I always find it best using quick tips that can adopted for your next round, especially if you don't have the time to put in the extra putting practice.

Hopefully the above tips will help improve your percentage for making short putts next time you play.
